Tropics Update: Hurricane Ian strengthens as it approaches Cuba

The system we have been tracking for many days, unfortunately, is on course to become a major hurricane and hit the Gulf Coast. Right now Florida looks to be the most likely point of landfall.

As of the 5 p.m. Monday advisory, Hurricane Ian as a Category 2 storm and strengthening rapidly. Sustained winds are 100 mph with gusts up to 120 mph, it is moving NW at 13 mph.

It is on a path to impact the western parts of Cuba bringing significant wind and storm surge. From there, it is forecast to enter the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to gain strength. For that reason, we have brand new warnings that have been issued for Florida. Central parts of the west coast are now under a Hurricane Warning as the crippling storms head that way.
