At 5:00 p.m., the NHC said Hurricane Ian had maximum sustained winds to be 140 miles an hour.

• Strength: Category 4
• Position: 5 miles east of Punta Gorda, Florida
• Movement: North-northeast at 8 miles per hour
The NHC said Ian is forecast to make landfall on the west coast of Florida as a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane. It will bring life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds and flooding to Florida.
