U.S. officials from the National Weather Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) cautioned Wednesday about the potential deadly impacts of hurricane Ian, as the storm approaches Florida’s southwest coast.
“Don’t go out there,” National Weather Service director Ken Graham said. “It’s so dangerous to be out there, so even if you see the water receding it’s not the time to be out there and look at it, or collect shells, or whatever it is.”
FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell said that the storm surge combined with significant amounts of rainfall will result in flooding and will create “an incredibly life-threatening, dangerous situations.”
She told Floridians to follow evacuation orders, adding that anyone who as unable to evacuate should get to high ground
Hurricane Ian is nearing Category 5 strength as it approaches Florida with windspeeds of up to 249 hm/h.
